#NHBPM- National Health Blog Post Month

Scrolling through  my facebook the other night, I came across a status from Kirsten from Running For Autism. She’s participating in the National Health Blog Post Month blog-a-thon. Since I’m perpetually late to every party, I decided I’d start now, even though 1/2 of November is already over! The thought is to write about health everyday for the next month, they give us a topic and we go to town. If for some reason, I can’t get one to work in our situation, they do provide alternates as well. Figured since I’m always looking for new blog topics, this might help!

The first topic is: Why I Write About My Health (or in my case: why do I write about my daughters health) OR My Favourite Thing About Social Media/The Internet/Online Health Communities. I’m sure I could talk at length about either of these options, but today I’ll go with door number 2.

Honestly I can’t narrow it down to just a few things about the internet/social media. Upon moving to Toronto 5+ years ago, I started a blog (well… this blog under a different name and on blogger) I used blogging as a way to communicate about our life in the big city to our friends and family back home in Nova Scotia. Who knew it would morph into something cool?!

After Jillian was diagnosed with cerebral palsy 3 years ago, I took to the internet to research ideas/treatments/etc. To make sure I was doing everything in my power to know everything about CP, Dr. Google and I became fast and furious friends. I also used it as a way to connect with other parents with a CP diagnosis (and even some people who HAVE CP) to bounce ideas off on, chat, empathize, etc. It’s been a life saver for me.

When we first moved to Toronto, Lauren was only 8 months old and it’s pretty difficult to meet new people in a HUGE city with an 8 month old in tow, the internet definitely helped through that and I made friends “inside my computer”. These friendships have forged through all this time and I feel that I know a lot of my internet friends as well or better than my “real life” friends.

This totally doesn’t need to have a health spin on it though, so if you are a blogger, what is your favourite thing to blog about? Or what is your favourite thing(s) about social media and the internet? I’d love to hear!
