The Time When I Met a Paralympian

Today, I was fortunate enough to go to Holland Bloorview’s Circle of Honor Awards. Basically, it’s one of the greatest achievements within our hospital. There are a few categories and I am nothing but thrilled to be volunteering with such a wonderful organization. It makes me excited and proud to see our hospital acknowledge the hard work and dedication from our staff.

Our “key note” speaker at this event was Josh Cassidy. And it was definitely fitting that he was a past client at Holland Bloorview. Josh is now a paralympian who is heading to London to compete in the 2012 paralympic games. His biography alone is quite astonishing. He was diagnosed with neuroblastoma (a form of cancer, the exact type that Penny is fighting, for the second time) at a few weeks old and his parents were told that they should expect the worst. 24 years later, Josh now competes in wheelchair racing as well as participating in many different marathons. In fact, he just won 1st place in the Boston Marathon just a few weeks ago.

His speech was so wonderful and articulate and I decided to play groupie when we all met in the spiral gardens for a reception after the awards. I’m sure I looked quite odd, glancing over to see if he was done talking to whatever group of people that were around him at that moment. Luckily my amazing friend Nancy stepped in and introduced me. She seems to do that a lot.  ;) (I was fortunate enough to travel with her to Wisconsin, last November and she decided to introduce me to this chaplain that was affiliated with the hospital we were touring. This chaplain was such a lovely lady, but she definitely didn’t want to stop talking. And of course, by this point, Nancy had moved away and was silently giggling that she roped me into that. ;) )

Thanks for posing for a picture with me, Josh! And I have to say that I actually love this picture a lot! (which is so rare!)
