A funny thing happened today. Jillian had an appointment with social work at Holland Bloorview. I should say that “I” had an appointment with social work. It was mostly for me to discuss what was going on in our family and get some much needed expertise! Our social worker was awesome! She sat and talked with me for 1.5 hours!!! I couldn’t believe it.
we talked about getting a respite worker in. I told her that when Jillian was first diagnosed I thought- a) we would never need a break. b) we could take on the world c) the girls have never had a “sitter” since Meg left. She gave me a contact that would probably work with both of the girls. I said “I just don’t like respite because it’s ONLY for Jillian. Lauren would be bummed if Jillian got to do fun things without her”. Apparently this woman is part time staff at Holland Bloorview and is really good to work with, so, I think I’ll set up an interview!!
Since the title of this post is “play”- Lauren and Jillian did a lot of that today during the appointment! Jillian was quite content playing by herself and one of the workers kept talking with Lauren. Lauren bounced from toy to toy (train set, sand table, kitchen, etc) and Jillian was just taking it all in. There was a boy that came in using a walker, Lauren said “I think we should get Jillian one.” sweet! Before we left, Jillian was playing with a doll (her favourite toys lately) and this doll was in a wheelchair. She took the baby out, did stretches and fed the baby. It was WAY cute!!!
So, hopefully since this meeting went so well we’ll be more connected with the Holland Bloorview team.

So glad to hear your appointment went well! I adore Laura the social worker who does parent support but I assume you met with someone affiliated with one of the departments.
I would love to hear a bit more about what you discussed and the advice you got.
Glad the apt. went well. Wether you think so or not, you do need some respite time. Maybe even use it to use for you and Adam to go on a mini date? at first… go out for a walk & a meal, if you don’t want to be gone long, than just dessert & coffee! The girls will be fine, and you will be refreshed and it will do wonders for both of you. When we become parents we tend to forget about our spouses, the “mother instinct’ takes over… a normal thing, but throw in a a child that needs extra care , well that really puts the spouse on the back burner and where does it put You? Don’t forget than Cheryl needs & deserves some time to herself once in awhile too. and if you can get it, that is awesome! *hugs*

I think if you need a break (or even if you don’t) just taking a few hours for yourself will be so refreshing and give you a chance to just do something for you. That you enjoy. Recharge those Cheryl – the woman who also is a mom batteries – you know
Sounds like a great appt. Hope they contact you. Sounds like you may have to go buy her a doll like that sounds too cute
